Sheriff Services

Services 

The Sheriffs Office is legally responsible for keeping the peace within the county. Sheriff’s deputies are responsible for providing law enforcement services in all areas of the county  

Patrol

The Patrol Division is responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, patrol of neighborhoods for general safety, interacting and educating citizens regarding crime prevention, and enforcing criminal and traffic laws within the County.  


In addition to the aforementioned duties, Patrol also includes the following assigned duties:
   *State Parks and Recreation
   *Forest Service: Happy Tree County Sheriff's Office participates in an annual cooperative agreement with the Forest Service to provide patrol   services in designed campgrounds, developed sites, or dispersed areas.  

Investigations

Patrol Deputies initiate most crime reports and are responsible for doing the follow up investigations when possible. Some cases, however, are so extensive that the follow up investigation is done by detectives. Homicides, felony sex crimes, child or elder abuse and major property crimes are examples of crimes that would be referred to Investigations.  


The Sheriff's Office participates with the assignment of one full time detective to the team. This team is comprised of detectives from The Happy Tree Police, Happy Tree State Police. The team works narcotics investigations.  

Marine

Happy Tree County Marine Patrol is responsible to enhance safety on public waterways in Happy Tree County, provide boater safety education and enforce Marine Laws. Happy Tree County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol is seasonal starting April 1st and ending September 30th.  

Search and Rescue

  Mission: To provide search and rescue for Happy Tree County and the state under the direction of the Sheriff of Happy Tree County. The group will assist the Sheriff's Office in other areas as requested.


The Search and Rescue Team trains in a variety of specialized disciplines with the mission of assisting those in need during a wildland or outdoor emergency. Rope climbing, swift water rescue, tracking, first aid and communications are just a few of the opportunities available to volunteers.

Specially trained units within the team provide expanded capabilities. Some of these units are the winter team (snowmobiles), swift water rescue and the trackers. The county owns and maintains a wide variety of equipment for use during SAR missions, including snowmobiles, watercraft, ATV's and four wheel drive vehicles.



911 Communications

The Happy Tree County Sheriff operates the 911 Communications Center for all of Happy Tree County. The Communications Center receives all 9-1-1 calls from within Happy Tree County. The Center also receives business calls for several emergency response agencies after normal business hours.

Records Division

Happy Tree County Sheriff's Office is committed to providing public access to records in a manner that is consistent with the State Public Records Law.

If there are criminal charges, the report will not be releasable until the case has been closed or adjudicated. The State Department of Human Services is the authority that may release records of child abuse pursuant. (if the reports are subject to disclosure).

Crime Prevention

The Crime Prevention Department focuses on providing education and training to the citizens of Happy Tree County to increase awareness and achieve overall crime reduction. Programs utilized and encouraged by the Sheriffs Office include: Neighborhood Watch, National Night Out, Burglary Prevention, Fraud Prevention, and Bank Robbery Prevention. The Sheriffs Department is also available for safety presentations and provides training in the areas of identity theft, personal safety, and overall crime prevention.

Domestic Violence Victim Witness Coordinator

The Domestic Violence Victim Witness Coordinator assists victims during the process of a domestic violence case through the Courts. The coordinator may contact victims by letter or telephone to gather additional information or to explain the victim’s options. The coordinator will also explain the court process, often appearing with the victim at proceedings.

School Resource Officer

The School Resource Officer program, implemented in 1999, places an officer inside the school district on a full-time basis. The philosophy of the SRO program is to fulfill three different roles when appropriate: teacher, counselor, and law enforcement officer. The SRO is not a district disciplinarian, but rather “police on campus,” to promote a positive image through interaction with students, parents, teachers, and administrators. The SRO’s office is at each High School, providing a high-profile presence and making him easily recognizable and approachable by students. The SRO also attends athletic events and other functions and serves as a guest speaker on issues such as drug abuse, laws, and other related topics.

Administrative Services

The Happy Tree County Sheriffs Administrative staff is responsible for a number of duties that assist the community and maintain the organization of the department. The staff is responsible for: retention and processing of records, collection and preservation of evidence, customer service both in person and via telephone, management of department inventory and supplies, compilation of collision and traffic data, budget and crime mapping, victim services, parking violations, animal control, and abandoned vehicles.

Jail

The Happy Tree County Correctional Facility is a division of the Sheriff’s Department. It’s 140 bed facility is staffed by the Correction’s Captain, the Correction’s Sergeant, and Correction Officers. The facility houses both male and female inmates who are sentenced or awaiting trial. We also maintains housing contracts with Inmates from other agencies are also housed at the facility. The corrections staff works closely with Happy Tree County Superior and District Courts. County Counseling Services and Medical staff from Local Hospital provide an in-house clinic as well.
